In a move that feels like a headline ripped straight from its own pages, satirical news powerhouse The Onion has purchased Alex Jones' controversial Infowars media empire at a bankruptcy auction.
In a twist that could only be described as the ultimate satire, The Onion, the renowned satirical news outlet, has acquired Alex Jones' Infowars in a bankruptcy auction. This unexpected development comes after Jones was ordered to pay over $1 billion in defamation judgments to the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims, whom he falsely claimed were part of a hoax.
The acquisition includes Infowars' website, social media accounts, studio, trademarks, and video archive. The Onion announced that Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun violence prevention organization, will be the site's exclusive launch advertiser.
Jones, visibly distressed, confirmed the sale in a social media video and stated his intention to file legal challenges against the acquisition. Despite the sale, he continues to broadcast from the Infowars studio.
This acquisition marks a significant milestone in the Sandy Hook families' pursuit of justice against Jones' harmful conspiracies. Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie was killed in the 2012 shooting, stated, "The dissolution of Alex Jones' assets and the death of Infowars is the justice we have long awaited and fought for."
The Onion's purchase of Infowars is a poignant example of satire intersecting with reality, highlighting the consequences of spreading misinformation and the enduring pursuit of accountability.
